On July 6th Pokemon Go was released in major app platforms. With this event the inner Pokemon fan awoke in millions of fans across the globe. It’s as if a phenomenon was resurrected. Everyone got involved, children adults, teens, and even elderly people all took to the streets to catch Pokemon. In what seems to be one of the most successful augmented reality apps out there.
BUT here is one person who stands out of the bunch. John Reid has taken his inner Pokemon trainer to a whole new level. He has traveled to Antarctica in search of his favorite all time Pokemon ARTICUNO. Articuno is an Ice and Flying Pokemon.
Here is a quick summary of the legendary Pokemon John was after:
“When Articuno flaps its wings, it can chill the moisture in the air around it, making snow fall. It flies from icy mountain to icy mountain. According to legend, it appears before doomed travelers lost in icy regions. As seen in the anime, Articuno sometimes aids travelers and guides them to safety. Articuno lives in cold, isolated locations, such as mountain peaks.” – http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Articuno_(Pok%C3%A9mon)
It is one of the rarest Pokemon and can only be found in cold weather, not in your back yard or on Highway I95. I had the lucky chance to speak with John when he came back from his trip-
Here is what John had to say
“It was pretty obvious, the only way I could find ARTICUNO was to go somewhere he would actually live on planet earth.”
John works as an Ad Optimization Coordinator for Buzzfeed.
I had to go in deeper and ask his fellow coworkers.
Austin Stone: “I knew John was a huge Pokemon fan, he has a Pikachu plush toy on his desk. and one time his dress pants ripped and it was Pokemon underwear (Laughs). When he asked for a week off I thought maybe he’s headed to Disney world, but I was wrong…”
Ashley Zeigel: “As a Pokemon trainer myself, I can honestly say what john did was Legendary, no pun intended. But it was very dumb and dangerous; we need him here.”
It took 4 days for Articuno to appear on his Pokemon Go App. As the experienced Pokemon trainer he is, he was able to catch this legendary Bird and truly be ranked as one of the best to play the app.
Here are some last words from the man himself, John Reid “It was truly one of the most adventurous times in my life. I don’t recommend other people to try this. Antarctica was ruthless, but in the end, it was worth it.”
